This month the world lost Sharon Jones, one of the pioneers of the soul and funk revival. I had to the great good fortune of seeing her in concert a few years back with her band the Dap-Kings, and it ranks as one of my favorite shows. Whether recorded or live, her sense of passion and power and groove are unmistakable. She embraced the traditional forms of soul and funk without becoming an anachronistic, hipster cliche or sounding tired.
If you need a pick me up in the exhausting and chaotic season, check out some of her tunes. Here’s a YouTube playlist.
And here’s a trailer to a documentary made following her on her last tour after being diagnosed with cancer. Here’s a touching series of photographs from the same period in her life.
