Encounters with Poety

Every now and then something drifts through my email (or, in this case, text message) that feels like it deserves a post here on the ole NDQ Blog.

Last week, I was discussing Songs of the Bunch Grass Acres which is the Clell Gannon book that we’re bringing back to live in the fall as an NDQ supplement.  Our sponsor Aaron Barth of the Northern Plain Heritage Foundation made an observation that Harvard’s archives houses the papers from the The Gorham Press which published Gannon’s work. Gorham Press seems largely to publish books by paying authors, but interestingly they also published Poet Lore magazine.

Poet Lore magazine’s early years featured a who’s who of early 20th century American (and international) poets in massive 500+ page issues. Fortunately a good many of these issues are now in the public domain and the University of Pennsylvania libraries offers this helpful guide. So, if you’re looking for something to read this weekend, this summer, or for the rest of the year, I would urge you to check out the Poet Lore archive!

And, Poet Lore continues to publish and you can subscribe to it for only $20!
