We learned earlier this month that long time NDQ contributor James Sallis had passed away. Jim was among the most prominent authors to frequent the Quarterly during my time as editor and, as a result, obituaries have appear in most major newspapers.
He was always prompt and pleasant in our correspondence and appears to have had a genuine appreciation for little magazines like NDQ. His website indicates that the Quarterly was not the only little magazine to which he contributed and the credits included in the recently published anthology of his short stories reinforces his literary promiscuity.
If you’d like to read some of his work in NDQ, go here and here. For more of his work, check out his website which has many links to recent publications. A comprehensive anthology of his short stories titled Bright Segments appeared in 2024. His most recent novel, World’s Edge, appeared last week.
